Immigrant children need not apply

A new bill tabled by the labour ministry will deny children, including those born in Greece, the right to benefit from a new government programme designed to assist low-income families (those declaring below 45,000 euros) with three or more children. Article 43, paragraph 5 of the draft law, which is currently being debated in parliament, explicitly states that immigrant parents of three children (known in Greek as triteknoi) and those with more than four children (politeknoi) will no longer be entitled to receive child benefits unless their children are Greek citizens. And this in a country where it is difficult (if not impossible) for the Greece-born children of immigrants to acquire citizenship through the process of naturalisation.
