Blood and strawberries: Hard times in Greece add pressure on migrant workers

With Greek unemployment at 27 percent, migrants take what work they can get. Often they toil in fields that Greeks abandoned over the past decades of consumption-fueled affluence. “We have roughly the same picture, with small variations, across the country,” Kanakis said. “Foreign workers working uninsured with very low wages, who live in poor conditions. These are frightened people, without legal documents, who don’t know the language.”
