UN-registered Syrian refugees up to 1.35 million

Officials in Athens say the number of United Nations-registered refugees who fled the fighting in Syria has risen to more than 1.35 million, with an average of 8,000 leaving the country daily. That marks a 350,000 jump from the figure available in early March, and a huge rise from the 33,000 registered a year ago. Panos Moumtzis of the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, says that including internally displaced people, a quarter of the population - more than 5 millon people - has been forced out of their homes.
