Illegal Migration

Rescue operation

Turkish authorities rescued about 25 illegal immigrants whose boat ran into trouble in choppy seas off Greece yesterday, officials said. Greek authorities first scrambled a rescue helicopter to search for the boat, but it was later found in Turkish waters and the immigrants were collected by Turkish authorities, said the Greek Merchant Marine Ministry, which coordinates rescue operations at sea. The ministry had received a call yesterday morning from one of the immigrants on board, saying the boat was in trouble off the island of Farmakonisi, which is in the southeastern Aegean Sea near Turkey. It was not immediately clear where the immigrants were from.
