Five escaped Evros detainees apprehended

Five of the seven men who escaped from a detention centre in the border region of Thrace have been apprehended, authorities said on Monday. The detainees - three Iraqis and an Algerian, Egyptian, Syrian and Turk - got out through a window and cut through a fence at the facility, located near the town of Feres, on Sunday morning. Six were in custody for human trafficking and one for a drug-related offence, police said. Three of the men were arrested by the Turkish authorities after swimming across the Evros river while another two were found hiding in the village of Poros, on the Greek side. Seven policemen serving at the time of the escape have been suspended from duty, pending an investigation.
