Torture victim vindicated
A turkish undocumented migrant whom the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) found was tortured by members of the Greek coastguard 10 years ago says he hopes that the ruling will serve “as a deterrent” and that “other people in Greek detention will draw hope from my story”. In a unanimous ruling delivered on January 17, the Strasbourg-based court said that Necati Zontul (photo) had suffered torture when a coastguard officer raped him with a truncheon at a makeshift detention centre for migrants in the Cretan city of Chania.
