Three in ten at risk of poverty

Just over three people in every ten in Greece - or 31% - was at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2011, European Union figures showed on Tuesday. According to a report published by Eurostat (pdf), the EU's statistical arm based in Brussels, the percentage of the population in Greece at risk of poverty was above the EU average of 24.2%. Almost one child in three with a migrant background is at risk of poverty in the 27 member states of the European Union, the report also found. Children who have a migrant background, meaning that at least one parent was born in another country than the current country of residence, were at greater risk of monetary poverty than children whose parents were native born.
